A Portion of Blake’s Winning Essay:

I am applying for this scholarship to pursue a career in automotive and diesel mechanics. This has been my passion, hobby and goal for the last four years of high school. The tuition for attending UTI (Universal Technical Institute) in Arizona will cost me $27,000 for the 16 month course. I plan on using this scholarship to help pay for my tuition. I will also be seeking student loans to help pay for my housing and living costs in Arizona. Living out of state will cost me considerably more than in state education.
UTI is ranked number one in the nation for training students in automotive and diesel mechanics. They offer continuing education STEP programs with big name vehicle manufacturers like BMW, Porsche and Mercedes. With this award I will strive to be in the top ten percent of my class and become an asset to society and the state of Washington by repairing automotive vehicles. I plan on returning to Washington State after graduation to build a career in automotive repair of both gas and diesel vehicles.
During my last year in high school, I have been a “Teacher’s Assistant” in Omak High School’s Automotive 1 & 2 classes. I assist younger students in repairing their vehicles and answer specific questions related to automotive problems they are troubleshooting. I am an active member of FFA (Future Farmers of America). I shoot trap for the high school team. In 2005, I was the only FFA member in state to shoot 25 out of 25 clay pigeons from the 26 yard line. Twice last year I shot 25 straight. I am currently taking Calculus at Omak High School. I currently have an “A” grade in the class. I have assisted the teacher to help explain how problems are solved and assist students when asked for help. I have always been active in team sports including baseball and football. I was active in football until I separated my shoulder. I have always had very good school attendance and have never been in any trouble.

I am an avid fan of skateboarding. I have helped wherever possible to promote the present skate park in Omak and Tonasket, Washington. By having these parks available for the young people of our communities, we can help them stay drug free and out of trouble. In this day and age, this is very important. I promote DARE and all programs for a drug and alcohol free environment for young people. Every spring and summer I participate in picking up garbage and help clean the roadway ditches from trash.
Once graduated from UTI, I plan on returning to Washington State to work as a gas and diesel mechanic. My goal is to eventually save up enough money to eventually start my own automotive repair business. I also plan on volunteering when needed at Omak High School to promote the career of automotive repair for students. With this career from UTI, I will become a positive asset to my community, a taxpayer, voting individual and will become a contributor to my community, state and nation. I plan on continuing my passion of trap shooting and promoting skateboarding. I also have future dreams of volunteering to help with youth programs, especially “Pop Warner” youth football and minor league baseball.
