Committees like stories of overcoming adversity.

Scholarship essays are as unique and varied as the people who write them, and the winning essays even more so. But if there’s a common theme that judges seem to like (and seem likely to throw money at), it’s the theme of someone overcoming adversity in order to succeed in the end.

Doesn’t everyone like those stories? That’s why we get teary-eyed watching the Olympics – always plenty of feel-good stories there. After all, scholarship judges are regular people like you and me, and who among us doesn’t like to feel good?

If you can’t think of what to write about, ask yourself – have I ever overcome any adversity? How did I do it? Would others be impressed by it? If the answer is yes, you’ve got a possible essay topic.
